so, initially i wanted to create a piece that implemented slomo as well
as hitchcock's use of the endless mirror (as seen in citizen kane):

i have a studio at my apartment complex that has facing mirrors and
i was hoping to maybe be able to create something in which i could
do a specific movement and have it either be delayed in the other mul-
tiple reflections or create a whole series of movements that would
overlap and clash over time, creating a kind of "wave" of movemnt.
it would most likely involve a matte of some sort and require the use
of the tapeless hd's ability to capture smooth slow motion.
unfortunately, however, i encountered a number of difficulties along the
way. day after the project was assigned, i went and checked out the tapeless
to shoot some practice footage in the gym oncampus. though i was able to
get some good slomo footage, it turned out that the .mts file that the
camcorder spit out couldn't be transferred or even read by my computer.
took me hours to figure out how to get some kind of footage going.
eventually, i found a program that could convert the file to .mp4, but
left a small watermark in the middle. disenchanted, i decided to try
something else. the result:
the initial idea for this video was to create a kind of stopmotion without
using stopmotion. personally, i really do love stopmotion and i've done a
number of pieces using it. nonetheless, i wanted to kind of experiment and
play with the whole idea and use of video capture to create the feel of stop
motion. so, what i did was document a simple action: making my bed. and
shoot it over the course of 40 minutes. i would then make changes to the
scene every 3 or so minutes. the video was then sped up 2000 percent and
all the scenes in which i was present were spliced out. all in all, it went ok.
not quite as nice or smooth as i expected. yet, this is more of just a test with
the concept. something much cooler may come out of it later. haha
Hi Clarence,
ReplyDeleteI like the fact that you chose to experiment with techniques with this project. As discussed in class, you could have stop the camera in between movements to control the speed of the stop motion more accurately. I think you could extend this technique/idea with further experiments, I hope you keep working on it.
